a question of perspective

in 1941, artist and theorist joaquín torres garcía toyed with the idea of changing perspectives, noticing that the dominant hemisphere appeared aptly to be that which was placed atop the other. his “turnabout map” allows us to reconsider stereotypical projections; our modern prejudices correlate directly with this abiding notion that we northerners are “above” the southerners.

there should be no north, for us, except in opposition to our south. so we now turn the map upside-down, to give us a fair idea of our position, and not as they wish in the rest of the world.
